Announcing the Tech Tour Growth 50 – Europe’s top 50 High Growth Companies
Geneva – March 19th, 2015 – The Tech Tour Growth 50, a list of Europe’s fastest growing pre-exit high-tech companies, is released today at the annual Tech Tour Growth Forum in Geneva.
The Tech Tour and Go4Venture Advisers, using data from Dow Jones VentureSource and Go4Venture Advisers proprietary database of large private transactions, researched and evaluated European private tech companies to identify the next generation of European businesses that have the potential to become multi-billion dollar companies: The Tech Tour Growth 50. The research was conducted over the past three months in conjunction with the International Venture Club (“IVC”).
While almost 50% of the companies are defined as ‘B2C eCommerce’, the list comprises a very broad range of products and services. For example spanning both B2C eCommerce and Business Applications (30%) is Financial Technology (20% of companies). Fin Tech businesses in the Tech Tour Growth 50 range from services as broad as asset backed lending, to payment platforms, to transaction services for mutual fund managers.
Some of the companies in the Tech Tour Growth 50 such as Spotify, Shazam and Skyscanner are already household names, others such as Scytl, Tradeshift and Talend deliver equally compelling and transformative services to business and society, but are as yet little known outside of the high-tech universe.
A common thread linking all the Tech Tour Growth 50 is an increasing growth pace through the life of the company. From a median foundation date of 2007, companies took, on average, 3 years and six months to achieve their first funding round, but hit their most recent funding round (average of 4 funding rounds in total) in just 3 years 11 months after the first funding round.
William Stevens, Managing Director, Tech Tour, commented “We are building more and bigger tech companies in Europe at a faster rate than ever. The multi-billion dollar success stories that grab our attention via public market listings or sales to much larger companies are, however, just the tip of the iceberg. Through the Tech Tour Growth 50 we wanted to shine a light on the rest of Europe’s high-tech, high-growth businesses. In the last decade Tech Tour Growth 50 Companies alone have created over 15, 000 tech jobs.”
Klaas de Boer, Managing Partner, Entrepreneurs Fund and IVC Chairman speaking on behalf of investors said “The Tech Tour Growth 50 is a clear demonstration of the current value being built for venture capital investors in Europe. Tech success can happen anywhere – not just Silicon Valley. These businesses, built in Europe by European entrepreneurs, are attracting global attention. While not part of the selection criteria, the presence of leading US investors in almost every Tech Tour Growth 50 is a strong signal of the strength and breadth of the tech investment opportunity in Europe.”
Commenting on the selection process Jean-Michel Deligny, Managing Partner, Go4Venture Advisers explained “We combined the quantitative rigour of using multiple data sources for valuation, sales growth and financing information with the qualitative insight of a selection committee of leading investors and advisers. We backed this up by asking CEOs and investors to supply in confidence supplementary information on financial growth plus softer growth metrics such as staffing levels, new customers, new products and new markets. We want the Tech Tour Growth 50 to become a reference tool for all those interested in up and coming European tech companies which so far have not had the exposure they warrant.”
