Tech CEO Stars Don’t All Shine Online
Nasdaq ‘All Star’ Tech CEOs are almost as elusive on social media as UK FTSE 100 CEOs
In late 2014, social media analytics provider Talkwalker found that only eight of the FTSE 100 CEOs tweet. Over the last three months, Talkwalker analysed the on line presence of the top ten Nasdaq Tech firms by market cap.
Sifting through 2 million results across online media and social networks, Talkwalker found that while most Top Ten Tech CEOs have some kind of social media presence, few make active use of it. Almost all had a Twitter feed but only six Top CEOs actively tweet. Only two of the 12 have publicly accessible Facebook pages and only three have publicly accessible LinkedIn pages.
Says Robert Glaesener, CEO Talkwalker:
“In the sharing economy, the ability to captivate an audience is now a critical component of the Tech CEO’s skillset. But while more and more people flock to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, Tech CEOs are still trying to work out the pros and cons of joining them”.
Tech CEOs stay faithful to their own firms. Zuckerberg does not tweet or post on Google +, but uses his Facebook page to tell his 32.7m followers about acquisitions and donations, usually biweekly. Larry Page avoids Twitter and Facebook, but uses Google + irregularly to tell his 9.29m followers about company news and projects underway.
Of all Nasdaq CEOs, combining their own social activity with mentions on all online media channels, Tim Cook has the biggest share of discussions (34%). Mark Zuckerberg follows with 32%. Cook is the most discussed Tech CEO on social media in the US whereas Zuckerberg is the most globally discussed Tech CEO.
Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Cisco’s John Chambers and Cisco’s Chambers and Google’s Page receive between four to five times fewer mentions online.

Few use social networks such as Facebook or LinkedIn to engage with the public. Twitter is the channel of choice, where the most active CEOs in order of level of social proactivity are to be found:

(Only 9 of the CEOs examined have a Twitter presence))
Outside the Top Ten, socially active Nasdaq CEOs include Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.
SAP are included in the top 10 despite being number 11 due to extremely limited online presence of the Taiwan Semi Conductor Manufacturing Company (#9 on NASDAQ Tech list by market cap)
